This is the same tree skirt featuring two different fabric collections - and The Holly Day fabric collection by Martha Negley for FreeSpirit and The Oxford Holiday Collection by Morris & Co. for FreeSpirit. The finished tree skirt measures approximately 54”x54” and is made up of several different elements including a 12” Compass block nested inside of a 28” Round Sunflower block, a large Dresden band, and faced petals around the perimeter. The finished medallion is quilted onto a felt background, split on one side, bound around this split, and then the felt is trimmed around the perimeter to finish off the tree skirt. This project can also be finished into a 60”x60” quilt and the pattern has a design section where you can plan your own fabrics for either a tree skirt or a quilt! Made using the Fat Robin 16-Point Book/Ruler Combo. FREE video tutorials are available for making this entire project under the Free Projects and/or Tutorials tab on this website.

Faced Hearts for Small Project Block - Heart with Straight Sides and Heart with Curved Sides.
Pic 1 - You'll make either the Skinny Robin or Fat Robin Small Project block found at the top of this page under Small Projects. Center the freezer paper heart of your choice onto your block and press it in place.
Pic 2 - Cut the block flush around the freezer paper heart.
Pic 3 - Take the freezer paper off.
Pic 4 - Sandwich your trimmed block, right sides together with some facing material. I like to use a lightweight non-fusible interfacing (Pellon P45) or you could use another piece of fabric.
Pic 5 - Sew around your heart shape using a 1/4" seam.
Pic 6 - Trim the excess interfacing away and clip the inside point at the top of the heart.
Pic 7 - Turn your block to the back and make a slit in the interfacing.
Pic 8 - Turn your block right side out and push the seam out all the way to the edges. Press from the back making sure that the interfacing won't show on the front when you are done. Now you have a finish heart block that you can appliqué onto any background or project. That's it!

My Compass Collection
60"x60"
Quilted by Wanda Rains
So happy with this quilt that I made for the FreeSpirit booth to showcase Tim Holtz fabrics including his Memoranda and Provisions collections. I love how these fabrics look both vintage and modern at the same time. This quilt is made with nine Fat Robin 32-Point Compass Sunflower (Version 1) 16" blocks finished into 18" finished squares. I used reverse appliqué for the centers and put pieced squares in the middle rotated to create more 'kite' shapes.
